Why the name Jorge Volio Jiménez?

This school is named after Jorge Volio Jimenez as a tribute to the great Costa Rican politician who devoted his life to serving the poor. Jorge Volio created a political party in order to fight for a series of laws that favored the working class and the poor. Jorge Volio was also a priest and a great educator. He made valuable publications on social and historical aspects.

Here are some important dates in his life:

  • August 26, 1882: He was born in Cartago from the marriage of Don Carlos Llorente and Matilde Jiménez Volio Oreamuno.
  • 1890-1896: Elementary education in the school of Juan Fernandez, then the Father Peralta School and Public School in Cartago.
  • 1901: He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in humanities with Unanimous Distinction at the Liceo de Costa Rica.
  • 1903: He traveled to Belgium where he joined the Leo XII Seminar at the University of Leuven. In Europe, he carried out studies at the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris and the University of Freiburg.
  • 1906: He received his Bachelor's Degree in philosophy Magna cun Laude.
  • 1909: He received the presbytery in Leuven.
  • 1911: He published the Social Religious and Literary Seminar "La Nave", a way to spread his concerns as a reformer.
  • 1919: Revolution of the Sapoá. General Volio was actively involved with the revolutionary forces that fought the dictatorial government of Tinoco.
  • 1922:   He got to Congress for the independent party of San Ramon.
  • 1923: The Reformist Party entered the electoral contest. There appears the manifesto of the Leader of the Reformist Party, commenting on its ideological agenda.
  • 1924: Candidate for President of the Republic from the Reformist Party.
  • 1936: He retired from active politics and devoted himself to cultivate the land in Sierpe, Osa County.
  • 1940: With the reopening of the University of Costa Rica, Volio is called to be part of their professors, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, Professor of Philosophy and Homeland History.
  • 1953: He became a deputy for the Independent National Republican Party.
  • 1955: He became a deputy for the Independent National Republican Party.
  • October 20,1955: He gave up his soul to the Creator.
